How the Clothing Industry is Damaging the Planet

How the Clothing Industry is Damaging the Planet

According to the EU Parliament, the fashion industry has a massive impact on carbon emissions – responsible for a whopping 10% of global emissions. This is more than maritime shipping and international light emissions combined, and degenerated roughly 270 kg of CO2 emissions per person as of 2020. From that, only 1% of clothing items are recycled into new clothes.

What’s more, with the popularity of fast fashion, problems like microplastics, energy and water use, and other material costs are having a devastating impact. It doesn’t stop there, though, as most of us will be familiar with the scandals that many companies have been involved in, and the working conditions and meagre pay of many workers.

Despite this, some polls have shown us that over 50% of adults over the age of 45 are not willing to wear second-hand clothing because they are ‘poor quality’, ‘unhygienic’, and ‘tend to be faded’. Looking at younger age groups, however (those aged between 18–34) are far more likely to buy second-hand, with 60% being happy to do so.

So, is it okay to wear preloved clothes? Why, or why not?

Is it Okay to Wear Preloved Clothes?

Yes. Yes, it is absolutely okay to wear preloved clothes, and we with more people would do it! There are so many benefits to opting for second-hand garments where you can, it’s difficult to even see a downside.

If you aren’t convinced, how about we go through some of the benefits of wearing second-hand clothes, and why you might want to consider doing the same.

Wearing Preloved Clothes isn’t Okay, it’s Fantastic – and Here’s Why

Wearing Preloved Clothes isn’t Okay, it’s Fantastic – and Here’s Why

Below are some of our favourite reasons for why wearing preloved clothes is a great idea if you are in the market for new clothes. There are plenty of other benefits to talk about, but time is limited, so let’s dive into it.

None of That Awkward ‘New Fabric’ Feel

We’ve all tried to buy a great pair of jeans, or a Hawaiian shirt, only for the fabric to feel… stiff and new. It takes time for the clothes to soften and get worn in, and nobody likes that. When you shop second-hand, you don’t need to deal with that, and all the clothes are (probably) already in their perfect state.

You Extend the Life of the Clothes

This goes when you buy second-hand and when you donate. Every garment should have the chance to be loved by someone else and get an extended life – it just makes sense. When you do this, the garments will last another couple of years at least, and you have immediately reduced your carbon footprint.

Preloved Chokes Fast Fashion

We already touched on fast fashion and the impact of the fashion industry on the world as a whole, so this is just your reminder that shopping second-hand is the perfect way to help the environment and not feed into the dangers of extreme consumerism.

You Save Money Second-Hand

Second-hand clothes are usually cheaper than new, and we all want to save as much money as we can in this economy. Of course, not all preloved clothing items are cheap, since there are always branded clothes up for grabs, too.

However, whether you go into a charity shop for your second-hand clothes or you visit an online shop like Preworn, you will notice huge reductions in prices.

Trash vs Treasure – You Know the Saying

We all know the saying ‘one man’s trash is another man’s treasure’, and this couldn’t be more true when it comes to clothes. We all have different fashion senses and preferences, and you are always going to find something that you absolutely love, even if the person who donated it came to hate it.

Love what you love, and find new things to love when you look at preloved clothes.

Second-Hand Clothes Often Last Longer

A lot of second-hand clothing is older, which usually means that it was made to last. Most clothing you get today is made to fray and fade after a few years (or even a few weeks or months in some cases), but this is not the case for clothes made years ago.

There Are Lots of Unique Clothing Items

Many people love vintage, or at least, different. That’s where second-hand clothing comes in because you probably aren’t going to find something else like it in your lifetime. There are so many unique pieces of clothing to nab that you would otherwise never see, and if you are looking for something a bit different from what you find in Next or New Look, second-hand is the perfect solution.
