How Much Does it Cost to Get a Laundry Machine Installed?

How Much Does it Cost to Get a Laundry Machine Installed?

You could always opt to have your laundry machine installed by a professional, but this usually comes at an extra cost – and it isn’t always cheap. Depending on where you get your machine from, the prices will vary a little bit, with no huge differences.

Prices range from £25 at John Lewis to £30 at Currys and AO. At Argos, you will be charged £50 for installation and the recycling of your old machine. At both Currys and AO, you will be charged an extra £25 for the old machine to be removed and recycled, while this price is at £20 per appliance with John Lewis.

So, if you decide to install your laundry machine yourself, you can save £25 or more, and if you are able to recycle the appliance yourself, that’s an extra £20–£25 saved. Although these are not huge numbers, they do all up, and we could all do with some extra cash.

How to Install a Laundry Machine

How to Install a Laundry Machine

To learn how to install a laundry machine, you are going to need a mole wrench or mole grips, a bucket, and a spirit level.

Here’s what you are going to do:

  1. Switch the old washing machine off and unplug it – remember to take any laundry out first!
  2. Pull the machine away from the wall and turn off the isolating valve located on the cold water supply – this is usually a small blue tap and shouldn’t be hard to locate
  3. Ensure the cold water supply is turned off, then unscrew the water-in pipe – make sure you have a bucket or container at hand to catch any water that comes out of the hose and be patient to let all the water come out first. The pipe will be attached around the top of the machine at the back.
  4. Carefully pull out the water-waste hose – this hose will be going from your washing machine to the floor. All you need to do is pull it out gently. At this point, you can get the old machine out of the way to put the new one in its palace.
  5. Take the carriage bolts out of the back of your new machines – these are only there to secure the machine drum during transit and can be unscrewed easily. You will see these attached to plugs.
  6. Attach your new cold water-in hose – the hoses you need will usually be found in the drum of the appliance. Simply screw the cold water-in pipe to the top back of the machine on the attachment and use mole grips to tighten and secure it.
    1. Screw the other end of the cold water-in hose to the cold water supply
  7. Turn the water-in isolating valve on again – with the machine and cold water supply not linked, you can release the isolating valve that you turned off in step 2. Let water run through the pipe and check for any leaks that you need to tighten up.
  8. Attach the waste water hose again – next, you need to feed the waste water hose that is already attached to the appliance down the waste water pipe. If your appliance came with a U-bend, you can use this to help the hose keep its shape
  9. Plug it in and make sure your washing machine is level – now with everything attached, you can plug it in and push it into its new place. Use a spirit level on the top of the machine to check that it is level. An uneven machine can cause damage and noise, and you can adjust the front legs until it’s even,
  10. Start using your new machine – everything is in place, the machine is level, and it’s ready to start using. Congratulations, you installed your own laundry machine!

Some Things to Remember When Buying a New Laundry Machine

Some Things to Remember When Buying a New Laundry Machine

You need to make sure that you find the perfect laundry machine for you and your needs. When you’re browning, whether online or in a store, you need to know what features you are looking for.

A few things that we would recommend keeping an eye out for include the following:

  • Features of the machine – does it have an eco wash, delicate wash, and other wash cycle and cycle length options that you feel you need?
  • Energy rating – the better the energy rating, the less power the machine needs to wash laundry, and the more money you can save long-term
  • Water usage – this often correlated with the energy rating, but measures how many litres of water are used per cycle
  • Capacity – this dictates how many kilograms of clothing the machine can handle and wash, with machine sizes ranging from about 6 kg capacity all the way up to 12 kg or larger
  • Dimensions – the height, width, and depth of the machine

The Depth of the Machine vs. Where it Will be Fitted

You need to measure the space you will put it (the height, depth, and width), and make sure you find a laundry machine that fits those dimensions. If you are getting a machine that can go anywhere you like, or you have no dedicated space for it, then this won’t be as important. However, many laundry machines are fitted beneath counters, so this is not something you should overlook.
