How do you get your laundry done while travelling?
So, you are travelling, and you have an urgent need to wash your clothes. Maybe you have spilt a drink on your favourite shirt, your children have soiled their outfits, or perhaps your swimming costume is sopping wet and grubby after a day at the beach!
Well, doing laundry is a chore that we sometimes can’t avoid, even when we are on holiday.
Follow these handy tips below, to find out exactly how you get your laundry done while travelling:
Packing for your holiday
- When booking your holiday, try to find accommodation which includes in-house laundry facilities, or that has laundry facilities nearby. This will save you the time and stress of panicking later when you have dirty clothes which you can’t bear lugging around with you in your suitcase.
- When packing for your holiday, bring plenty of carrier bags with you, to store wet clothing, damp towels and dirty clothes. You don’t want to pack dirty or wet clothing into your suitcase with all your clean, dry items.
- You should also bring a laundry bag with you on holiday, to store dirty laundry.
- Always pack soap powder, laundry soap sheets, or a travel bottle of laundry detergent, in case you need to hand wash your clothes.
- While you are on holiday, always separate your dirty laundry from your clean clothes.
- Pack clothes which are low maintenance and require less laundry.
- Bring plenty of cash and coins with you while you are travelling, as local launderettes are most likely going to be coin-operated.
- Always pack spare outfits to replace the ones you are already going to wear, in case of any spillages or accidents.
- Plan ahead for outfits that you will wear during outdoor activities where your clothes will get wet or dirty (e.g. swimming, visiting a water park, canoeing, quad biking.) You know you will return to your hotel with dirty, wet clothing, so you will need to store or clean them accordingly.
Hotel in-house laundry services
- When you arrive at your hotel, the staff should inform you if they have any in-house laundry services. This is really convenient because it means you can get your clothes professionally cleaned and dried, usually in the same building that you are staying at.
- The hotel staff will instruct you on how their laundry process works, and what time you will be able to have your clothes cleaned and dried.
- Hotel laundry services tend to be expensive, however.
Find a local launderette
- If your hotel doesn’t have any in-house laundry services, then ask the staff to direct you to a local launderette. You can also go online and use Google Maps to search for a local launderette close to your hotel.
- These local launderettes may not offer pick-up and drop-off options, in which case, you will have to visit the site and take your laundry yourself. The hotel staff will have plenty of local knowledge, so they can verify which launderettes are worth a visit.
- You may find it useful to look for a smartphone app for a laundry company which is local to you. You never know, there could be a terrific online laundry company operating close to your location. For example, search for ‘online laundry service’, followed by your location, and see what results come up.
- If you are travelling abroad, don’t be tempted to wander around and find a launderette yourself. This might be a waste of your time, and you might get nowhere. Google Maps is probably the most reliable tool at your disposal, as is asking the hotel staff for recommendations.
- If you are travelling in the UK, but can’t find a local launderette, then you can use a self-service laundromat which is available at many caravan parks and resorts.
Hand washing your items
- You could also hand wash your items in the hotel sink or bathtub. Hand washing can be done easily for smaller items such as t-shirts, swimming costumes, underwear and socks. This may be more difficult for larger clothing and soiled clothing.
- Simply fill a sink or tub with warm water and sprinkle in soap powder or detergent. If you don’t have soap powder or detergent to hand, then use soap from the hotel toiletries.
- Swirl the clothes around in the water and repeatedly turn them over, to release the dirt. Rinse and repeat the process.
- Leave the wet items to dry overnight in the sink or bathtub, and make sure you avoid dripping water all over your hotel room.
- Your hotel may have a policy which bans you from hand washing items in the bathroom and hanging wet clothes out to dry. In this case, turning to a local launderette is the best option.
- One neat trick is to place your wet clothes on a clean towel, and then roll the towel up. Leave it for a couple of hours, and once you unroll the towel, your clothes will be almost completely dry!
- If your hotel room has a hairdryer, then use this to dry off damp clothing.
Useful Gadgets
- You can buy pegless clothes washing lines for under £10, which have suction ends and hooks, to hang wet clothing. These gadgets are designed for travelling, so they are really useful for drying clothes quickly.
- Investing in a handheld garment steamer is a great idea for getting wrinkles and creases out of clothes.
- Pack a lint roller in your suitcase to quickly remove lint and fluff from your outfits, and voila, you are all ready for the day.
