How Do Hotels Remove Smoke Smell?
Have you ever visited a hotel and no a lingering odour of smoke?
Most hotels don’t allow guests to use products such as cigarettes, vape pens, and incense in their rooms. But that doesn’t stop a select few from disobeying the rules, which can leave a lasting smoky odour in the environment.
So, how do hotels remove smoke smell? We will discuss this question in this article.
How do hotels remove smoke smell?
Every hotel, bed & breakfast, or Airbnb must make an excellent first impression on guests, from the moment they walk through the doors. If the guests start to complain about smoky smells in the rooms, then this will dampen their travel experience and put off new customers from booking a stay there.
There are a multitude of ways in which hotels keep their rooms clean and fresh for their guests.
So, exactly how do hotels remove smoke smell? Well, the methods include:
- Removing ash trays and smoking materials from the rooms.
- Throwing out mattresses, pillows, curtains or any furnishings which have a set-in smoke odour.
- Using air purifiers, to filter toxins from air and release fresh, cleaner air instead.
- Using ozone machines, to remove airborne contaminants and odours from the rooms.
- Fitting extractor fans in the hotel, which draw cigarette smoke outside.
- Opening windows, to air out every room and encourage a fresh, outdoor breeze to waft inside.
- Thorough cleaning, sanitising, wiping and vacuuming of the rooms.
- Polishing hotel room windows, mirrors and blinds, where the cigarette smoke can become embedded into.
- Deep cleaning of hotel room furniture, walls, ceilings and carpet, as cigarette smoke can become trapped and cause yellowish discolouration stains.
- Constantly changing and replacing hotel linens such as bedding and towels.
- Replacing the filters in heaters and air conditioners, which tend to trap foul odours.
- Using scented candles, diffusers, air fresheners, aerosol sprays, deodorisers and fragrances, to keep the rooms smelling pleasant.
- Leaving out a bowl of white vinegar, to soak up unpleasant odours that lurk in carpets, rugs and upholstery.
Does smoke smell stay in walls?
Yes, the smell of cigarette smoke can become embedded on walls, carpets, ceilings and other surfaces. What happens is the tar and nicotine from the cigarette smoke develop a sticky, hardened surface, which makes the smell last for longer.
Moreover, cigarette smoke can travel through the smallest gaps and cracks found in:
- air vents
- plumbing
- electrical outlets
- cable and phone jacks
- gaps in insulation
Cigarette smoke smell can linger for months and even years, if nothing is done to clean the surface.
Lingering smoke smells on walls are a hazard to human health. The toxic chemicals from cigarette smoke can enter the body when someone touches the contaminated surface or breathes in the foul odour.
In fact, the thirdhand smoke on surfaces like walls can also cause serious health problems. Long-term exposure to toxins can damage human DNA and increase the risk of disease.
How do you get cigarette smoke out of walls?
An easy hack to remove cigarette smoke is to leave a bowl of cat litter and bicarbonate of soda in the room, which will slowly start to lift the smell.
If you don’t fancy using leaving pet items around, then leave out bowls of vinegar instead, which should do the trick. If you don’t like the smell of vinegar, then add a drop of lavender oil to the bowl of vinegar.
Alternatively, place coffee grounds in a bowl, to help absorb the smoky smell; coffee contains nitrogen, which helps neutralise odours quickly and safely.
If the cigarette smoke is particularly strong, then try dipping a sponge in vinegar and warm water. Use this to wash the ceilings and walls- the vinegar will act as a natural cleaning agent to dissolve the grime left behind by the smoke.
To take it a step further, you could also apply a new coat of paint to the walls to trap the cigarette smoke’s toxic chemicals in, and prevent them from penetrating the rest of the room.

To lift the smoke smell from your clothes, try the following methods:
- As soon as you have finished wearing your smoky clothes, change out of them and take a shower if you can.
- Air out your smoky clothes, before putting them in your wardrobe, washing machine, tumble dryer or laundry basket. Try doing this outdoors in the fresh air if you can.
- Add half a cup of white vinegar and warm water to a spray bottle. Spray this solution all over your home, to combat the smoke odour.
- Take your smoky clothes to a laundry company or dry cleaners (such as ours at Love2Laundry) who can clean your items thoroughly, with a professional finish.
- Before washing your smoky clothes, put some lavender water in a spray bottle and give the clothes a quick spritz.
- Add baking soda to the drum of your washing machine, throw your smoky clothes inside, and wash on a high heat setting.
- If you are hand washing your smoky clothes, then add baking soda and laundry detergent to a tub of warm water and soak the garments. Let the garments soak for 1 hour, before allowing them to dry outdoors in the fresh air, or in a well-ventilated spot indoors.
- If the smoky smell persists, repeat the wash.
Is thirdhand cigarette smoke dangerous for children?
Yes. Babies and children can be exposed to the harmful toxins from cigarettes, even after the adult has finished smoking a cigarette.
Little ones spend a lot of time on the floor, playing, crawling, or putting their hands and toys in their mouths. This means that babies can swallow or breathe in toxins from the surfaces which have been contaminated with thirdhand cigarette smoke.
If a child is exposed to second-hand smoke, then the nicotine in cigarettes can absorb into the skin, affect a child’s developing brain and lead to lung-related problems including asthma, bronchitis and childhood cancers.
Additionally, passive smoke is also dangerous for pregnant women: it makes their unborn baby more prone to premature birth, low birthweight and sudden infant death syndrome (cot death).
